Jo Ann Asseri’s life took an unexpected turn after a series of heartbreaking events. In 1993, a disaster struck in Benoit, Mississippi, leaving her house in ruins. With nowhere to go, she and her two children were suddenly left without a roof over their heads.
As if that wasn’t enough, tragedy struck again when her husband passed away unexpectedly. Now facing both financial uncertainty and homelessness, Jo Ann had to figure out a solution fast.
A Plane Becomes an Unconventional Home
With limited money and few options, she initially looked into buying a mobile home. However, it quickly became clear that a trailer spacious enough for three people was beyond her budget.
That’s when her father-in-law, Bob, who worked as an air traffic controller, proposed a surprising idea-what if she turned an old airplane into a house?
From Aircraft to Cozy Living Space
Intrigued by the suggestion, Jo Ann wasted no time making it a reality. The cost of transforming a retired aircraft into a livable space came to about $30,000-still far less than purchasing a traditional home.
The plane itself was a great fit for her needs. Measuring 138 feet (about 42 meters) in length and featuring 76 windows, it offered ample space and plenty of natural light.
A Fully Functional House Inside an Airplane
Jo Ann designed a warm and practical living space within the aircraft. She included three bedrooms, a living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and even a laundry room. With a washing machine, dryer, telephone, and oven installed, the home had all the essentials for everyday comfort.
What started as an unconventional solution to a difficult situation turned into a unique living arrangement that captured public interest and admiration.
